What is the Subwoofer?
Subwoofer is type of speaker which specialized in producing bass tone. It is designed to produce sounds at low frequency. If you’re using a pair of near-field studio monitors which means you have a 2.0 speaker system, add subwoofer it will be 2.1 speaker system.
Good subwoofer is the one can produce super bass tone while still keeping sounds clear and sharp. Additionally, good sound quality subwoofer depends on your setting and assembling.
Do I really need a Subwoofer in my Studio?
Adding subwoofer to your studio or not bases on your work. If you often have to work with EDM, dance or mixing for clubs, bars or movies and games, you’ll need subwoofer because almost the sound systems at these places have subwoofer.
However, adding subwoofer to your studio isn’t as simple as connecting wires to device. Not all of us can work in a room which is ideal acoustic, most of us work at a small 400ft square room. Small rooms usually cause inaccuracy of low frequency ‘cause of resonant, elimination effects,… at some specific frequencies.
Let’s make simple calculation, at 30MHz with 32.8ft wavelength means it needs at least the distance of 32.8ft from speakers to wall in order to be completely developed one period.
Therefore, with small studios, even if you make EDM, movie scores I recommend you not to use subwoofer so soon when you don’t have enough experience. If you’ve already processed audio well you should buy monitors which produce super low frequency such as 30 Hz or 35 Hz, by that way, you would satisfy 90% of your recording demand relate to those applications above.
Most of the studio monitor speakers which have 8in woofer speakers usually complete this task well.
